Guys, I have accidentally deleted a codespace i created from jupiter template which was not published yet, i need it back because it has important files in it. How do i retrieve it?

Hi @JoeBornrich,

Unfortunately, once a codespace is deleted, it can't be restored through the settings as you would with a deleted repo. However, GitHub support may be able to help you restore it. Open a ticket at the dedicated data restoration section here and explain your problem.

Unfortunately, deleted Codespaces are not recoverable by default, as GitHub does not back them up once removed — this is clearly stated in their documentation.

That said, if your Codespace was deleted very recently, you still have one shot:

Submit a request to GitHub Support via their Codespaces Data Recovery Form:
https://support.github.com/contact/codespaces-data-recovery

In your request, be specific — include:

• The name of the Codespace (if known)
• The repository it was tied to
• Approximate deletion time

Just note: GitHub makes no guarantees, especially for unpublished or template-based Codespaces. But in rare cases, they may be able to retrieve snapshots if not yet purged from their backend.

For the future:

• Always push important files to a remote repo early, even if private.
• Consider automating backup scripts inside your Codespaces.
