file path not working (404 error) for MTA-STS Policy for custom domain in pages

I have looked for a discussion/trouble shooting question that matched or solved my specific problem, so I apologize if this has been answered several times before...

I have successfully connected my custom domain to GitHub and enforced HTTPS.
from my godaddy DNS records I have the following:

CNAME | mta-sts | emberclay.github.io.
CNAME www emberclay.github.io.
TXT _mta-sts v=STSv1; id=20240503
A @ 185.199.108.153
A @ 185.199.109.153
A @ 185.199.110.153
A @ 185.199.111.153

github pages says my site is live at https://mta-sts.emberclay.com and this is a working link.

the name of my repository is mta-sts-emberclay-com, and in the main branch I have the file /.well-known with 'mta-sts.txt' inside of it.

when I visit https://mta-sts.emberclay.com the website shows as a valid html
When I visit https://mta-sts.emberclay.com/.well-known/mta-sts.txt I am seeing a 404 error.
additionally, when I go to a free MTA-STS checker, https://easydmarc.com/tools/mta-sts-check, my domain shows a valid DNS record, but not a valid filepath to the mta-sts.txt file

I have troubleshooted this for three days, with youtube videos, help docs here in GitHub, and GitGPT back and forth. Any help would be very much appreciated.

I just need the above file path and url to post these 4 lines of txt and CANNOT seem to get it done:

max_age: 86400
